Phoaly is a local-first photo organizer for Mac. It reads the folders you already use, builds a disposable index beside them, and lets you browse, search, dedupe, and cull photos without importing, copying, or uploading the originals.
That one sentence explains most of the product. The rest of this page covers who it is for, how it differs from Apple Photos and Lightroom, and what the first session looks like.
What local-first means here
Most photo apps ask you to import files into a library. The library becomes the source of truth, and the original folder structure becomes a secondary detail. Phoaly works the other way around.
- Your folders stay the library. Phoaly adds an index beside them.
- Scanning, browsing, and previewing are read-only.
- The index is disposable. Delete it and rebuild it; your photos are untouched.
- There is no account, no cloud sync, and no photo upload.
- After activation, the app works fully offline. Map tiles are the only optional network request.
If you already have a folder structure you trust, this is the shortest path from a drive full of photos to a library you can browse and search.
Who it is for
Phoaly is built for people whose photos already live in Finder:
- Photographers with years of shoots organized by client, date, or camera.
- Families with phones, cameras, and old drives mixed together.
- Anyone who wants local search and organization without a subscription or a cloud account.
It is not a RAW developer or a color editor. If your main work is grading images, keep your editor. Phoaly handles finding, sorting, culling, renaming, moving, and cleaning up.
What you can do with it
Browse the folder tree you already have
The sidebar mirrors Finder. Grid view is the overview, list view shows file details, gallery view gives one large frame with a filmstrip, and map view shows where the photos were taken. Sorting and grouping are independent: sort by capture time, then group by folder, date, place, or camera.
Search by what is in the picture
Visual search runs on this Mac. Type “city lights,” “sunset by the sea,” or a Chinese description, and Phoaly compares the sentence against a local vector index. The text encoder and the photo vectors stay on the machine.
File name search is also available. It uses an FTS5 trigram index, so Chinese substrings and fragments from the middle of English names both match.
Group people and scenes
Face detection, embeddings, and clustering run locally. Each person gets a page with the photos they appear in. Wrong groupings can be merged, split, renamed, or corrected by assigning a face by hand. A manually assigned face is locked so a re-cluster leaves it alone.
A single visual pass also assigns scene categories: people and pets, daily life, and scenery and cities, across twelve scenes. One photo can belong to several categories.
See the footprint on a map
GPS from EXIF becomes a point on the map, clustered by viewport and zoom. Place names come from an offline gazetteer, so the map still names cities without a network. Online tiles can be switched off.
Cull a shoot
Keep, maybe, and reject each have a key. Marking advances to the next photo, progress counts the whole scope, and deletes go to the system Trash with an undo.
Organize with a preview
The workbench plans a change, shows the full result, and waits for confirmation. Target paths, name conflicts, cross-volume size, and free space are stated before anything runs. Copies are verified with sha256. A cross-volume move copies, verifies, then sends the source to the Trash. One gesture is one plan, and the journal can undo a single drop or a whole session.
The step-by-step organizing guide walks through a first clean-up.
How Phoaly differs from Apple Photos
Apple Photos is a library app. It imports photos into its own database, and iCloud Photos can sync that library across devices. That is a good fit if you want one managed library and you are comfortable with the cloud.
Phoaly does not create a library and does not import. It reads the folders you already have. The comparison is less about which app is better and more about which model fits your archive.
| Apple Photos | Phoaly | |
|---|---|---|
| Source of truth | Its own library | Your existing folders |
| Import step | Required | None |
| Cloud sync | Optional iCloud Photos | None |
| Account | Apple ID for sync and purchases | None for the app |
| Original files | Managed by the library | Read-only during scan and preview |
| Main strength | Consumer library, editing, sharing | Folder browsing, local search, batch organizing |
How Phoaly differs from Lightroom
Lightroom is a RAW developer with a catalog. Its core value is image processing and a managed catalog. Phoaly is an organizer. It does not develop RAW files, and it does not try to replace an editor.
| Lightroom | Phoaly | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | RAW development and color | Finding, sorting, culling, organizing |
| Catalog | Managed catalog | Disposable index over your folders |
| File movement | Catalog-centric | Explicit plans with preview and undo |
| Subscription | Yes | One-time purchase |
| Editing | Extensive | Rotate and crop only |
A common setup is to use Phoaly to cull and organize a shoot, then open the selects in your editor. The two tools solve different problems.
Requirements and pricing
- macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon.
- About 290 MB for the app. The index and thumbnails add more, depending on library size.
- 30-day trial with every feature, followed by a 7-day grace period. After that the app becomes read-only until you activate.
- One-time purchase: $19 for one Mac, $29 for two Macs. Lifetime updates are included.
- No account is required to download, trial, buy, or activate.
Frequently asked questions
Does Phoaly upload my photos?
No. Photos, thumbnails, EXIF, GPS, file paths, face vectors, and visual vectors stay on your Mac. Activation sends the license key, a random device ID, and the app version. Map tiles send standard tile coordinates and can be switched off.
Does Phoaly import or move photos when I add a folder?
No. Adding a folder only builds an index. Files move only when you confirm an organize plan, a rotate, or a crop. Deletes go to the system Trash and can be undone.
Can I use it on more than one Mac?
Yes. The one-Mac tier covers one device and the two-Mac tier covers two. You can release an old device in the license portal and activate another.
What happens when the trial ends?
The app becomes read-only. You can still browse and export, but scanning, visual search, people management, culling, and organizing pause. Your originals and index are not changed.
Does it work offline?
Yes, after activation. License validation happens at startup and periodically; when the Mac is offline, those checks are skipped quietly.
